Items To Complete Prior To Your Home Purchase Closing

Getting organized can help keep the home purchase process less stressful. With all the things that you have to take care of, you can easily forget a few crucial items. The items to complete prior to your home purchase closing in this article covers some things you must not forget.

Forward Mail

To ensure that you receive your mail, remember to change your address and request mail forwarding. This is completed with the United States Post Office either online or at their local office. Forwarding is meant as an interim service and thus remains in place for a brief timeframe. You must contact everyone and notify them of your new address. Do not forget creditors, insurance providers, employers, and of course friends and family.

Update Vehicle Insurance

Inform your auto insurance provider of the new address. Your rate can change given the location. If you are moving out of state, you must also register all vehicles and apply for a new license. Many states have reciprocity and will not require a test.

Register Kids for School

If you have school-aged kids, call the school to find out what documentation is needed for new students. You typically must have records from the existing school. You might also need copies of immunization paperwork and verification of residency. Lastly, most districts require in-person enrollment.

Call Utility Companies

At least 7 days prior to closing, contact utility providers to cancel existing accounts and set up new ones. Among these services are electricity, fuel (oil/gas), Internet and cable, and phone services. For usage based utilities, the companies normally take a meter reading at the cutoff point. If you do not initiate service at your new home, then they may physically turn off the prior service and charge a fee to restart it later. It is therefore important to touch base with them ahead of time to stop a lapse in service and added costs.

Other Items To Complete Prior To Your Home Purchase Closing

These items to complete prior to your home purchase closing include only a few key tasks to take care of before finalizing a property purchase. There may be other tasks to address based on your specific situation. For example, if you operate a business, you will need to register that.
